ArchivalResource

John Cuzner collection, 1837-1933.

Correspondence written to his fiancee Ellen by a soldier with the Sixteenth Connecticut Infantry, Company B between 1862-1865. Cuzner was a prisoner who was paroled in 1864, after reaching a weight of only 80 pounds. Also includes transcripts of the letters compiled and written by his daughter Jennie Cuzner Sperry, evidently intended for publication. Of interest are two published songs, entitled "When the Sixteenth Marched Away", and "The Song of the Union Prisoners" and a handwritten sheet with the words and music of the song "Yankee Doodle Dandy Oh!" These are supplemented by programs for anniversary celebrations of the Battle at Antietam, and assorted printed material about the Civil War from magazines. Seemingly unrelated but part of the collection are bills and correspondence related to Dorrance Welles of Glastonbury and other members of the Welles family.

0.25 linear foot (1/2 box).
